What format is the nature photography delivered in? – Affordable Nature Photography

JPEG in sRGB, why that is right for landscape work, and what to do before sending it to a press.

Every download is a JPEG, RGB, tagged sRGB, encoded at a quality where compression is invisible at full magnification.

Why JPEG and not something bigger

It opens everywhere, carries an embedded profile, and at high quality is visually identical to a lossless file at a fraction of the size. For continuous-tone photography, which is all of this catalogue, nothing is gained by shipping TIFF.

PNG is worse than useless here. It is built for flat colour and hard edges; on a landscape it produces an enormous file with no visible benefit at all.

Why sRGB

Because it is what every browser, phone and platform assumes when an image arrives without a profile. A wider space looks better in an editor and worse everywhere else, because the extra saturation is silently clipped by anything that ignores profiles.

Landscape work is more forgiving here than floral work, since foliage greens, rock and sky sit well inside sRGB. The exception is a saturated sunset: deep oranges and magentas at the horizon are the one part of a valley frame likely to sit near the edge of the space.

Preparing for print

Convert to CMYK once, at the end, using the profile your printer gives you. Do not convert on import and then edit.

Expect two shifts. Saturated sunset colour will pull back, which is unavoidable. And deep shadow in a valley floor will block up more than it does on screen, because ink cannot hold the same shadow separation a backlit display can. Lifting the deepest quarter-tones slightly before conversion is usually the whole fix.

Proof on the actual stock if the sky is the point of the picture.

Metadata

The file carries a title, a description, a keyword set and the asset id in its IPTC fields, plus the documented location where one exists. Layout software reads these, which makes it much easier to work out later which photograph ended up on which page. Nothing in the metadata identifies you or your purchase.

Web use

Do not upload the original to a website. Re-encode to the width you actually display, export WebP or AVIF with a JPEG fallback, and serve a responsive set. A six-thousand-pixel valley served to a phone is several megabytes spent on pixels nobody will see, and it is the commonest cause of a slow image-heavy page.

Compression settings that hold up

Landscape frames compress unevenly. Smooth sky gradients band at settings where foliage still looks perfect, so tune to the sky rather than the trees.

In practice, WebP at quality 80 handles a valley frame without visible banding; below about 72 the gradient in a clear sky starts to step. If a frame is mostly sky, go higher rather than lower. If it is mostly forest, you can go further down than you would expect and nobody will see it.

Always keep the original archived and treat every web asset as derived.
